Cooked Apple Topping

This brown sugar and cinnamon apple topping is great to make during apple season, and it’s quickly become one of my favourite things to make during Fall.

This tasty topping can be added to so many things, and a few of my favourites include, enjoying them with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and topping them on a cream cheese bagel. Enjoy!

Ingredients make 3 (125 ml) mason jars

3 medium apples

1/2 cup brown sugar

2 tbsp unsalted butter

2 tbsp fresh lemon juice

1/2 tbsp cinnamon

Directions

- Wash the mason jar lids with soapy water and rinse well. Place them on a clean towel.

- Pre-heat the oven to 180 degrees F.

- Line a cookie sheet with tin foil.

- Peel the apples and dice them into small pieces.

- Put the mason jars on the cookie sheet and place in the oven. Keep them in the oven while the apples cook.

- Put the apples, brown sugar, butter, lemon juice, and cinnamon into a pot.

- Heat on medium and mix often.

- Cook until the apples are soft and the mixture thickens a bit. Reduce the heat a little. There should only be a soft boil.

- Using a large pot, fill it with enough water so the mason jars will be covered. Bring to a boil.

- As the water heats up, put the apples in three small mason jars, leaving a 1/4 inch of space at the top. Screw the lids on tightly.

- Careful place the jars in the boiling water using a jar lifter and put the lid on the pot. Boil for 15 minutes.

- Reduce the heat a little if needed.

- Turn the element off and keep the pot on the stove for 5 minutes.

- Carefully lift out the jars using a jar lifter and let them sit on the counter overnight.

- Store in the fridge.

- Heat in the microwave for about 15 seconds to warm before using.
